BactiPlus Product Review (formerly Bactium)

Probiotics are all the rage these days, and with good merit.  These healthy bacteria not only help ease a plethora of digestive problems (such as gas, bloating, diarrhea, indigestion, IBS); but they have been shown to be beneficial in terms of fighting and preventing infections, allergies, eczema, colds, flu, and so much more. Popular products range from special yogurts and yogurt-like beverages to supplements and “probiotic fortified” foods.

But probiotics don’t do it all on their own… and the lesser known prebiotics, which give probiotics the power they need to thrive, deserve a little more credit than they’re currently getting.

Fortunately, more and more companies are recognizing the power of prebiotics, and are including them in supplement formulas as well as foods and beverages. One product we took a look at is BactiPlus, manufactured by Swiss Labs.

What is it?
You may have heard of Bactium, a similar product made by Swiss Labs.  But the BactiPlus formula is like Bactium with a boost.  It contains four “super-strains” of probiotics (25 BILLION worth of healthy flora) and 150 mg of prebiotics.

Why are prebiotics so important?  Simply put, prebiotics act as the “food” that probiotics need to survive and thrive.  Without prebiotics, probiotics would not be able to effectively do their job.  Not only that, but prebiotics on their own pack a powerful punch.  They have been shown to boost the immune system and ease the effects of colorectal diseases.

What Does It Do?

It’s become a mantra for naturopath doctors (and some “regular” doctors as well): death begins in the colon.  If you don’t have a healthy digestive system you can get “clogged up” with bad bacteria, which then turns toxic and can even leak into your bloodstream!  This leads to all sorts of problems, including a weakened immune system, colds, flus, allergies, asthma, fatigue, and even mood disorders. To combat this from happening in the first place, you need the good bacteria – probiotics – to clean out the bad stuff and keep you healthy.  And for the good bacteria to be effective, you need prebiotics to help them along the way.

Many people might read this and say, “Well, I’ll just do a colon cleanse now and again and I’ll be fine.” But what they don’t understand is that colon cleanses don’t solve the root of the problem – they only address the symptoms.  To have a truly healthy, truly effective, truly beneficial digestive system (and good overall health), you need to give your body an overhaul – and probiotics/prebiotics can help you do that.

Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium Bifidum, Lactobacillus plantarum, Bifidobacterium Lactis, FOS, Inulin.

What We Like

One word: results.  This formula has 25 billion live healthy bacteria, which is more than two times what most probiotic products contain, as well as the 150 mg of prebiotics. Testimonial after testimonial shows that BactiPlus really works.

And this isn’t your typical store bought probiotic. The typical vitamin store may have many probiotics to choose from – but herein lies the problem.  Probiotics are LIVE healthy bacteria.  Most mainstream probiotic products have been sitting in a warehouse and on store shelves for way too long, depleting their effectiveness.  Some don’t even have expiration dates on them – add in the manufacturing process and the addition of preservatives – and you have yourself a useless pill.  The finest probiotics have short shelf lives, and should be kept in a cool place (even refrigerated) for optimum results.

What We Don’t Like
The same goes for BactiPlus that we found with Swiss Labs’ other probiotic product, Bactium: it’s best to keep them both in a cool place, which might make traveling with them a little tricky.
As always, check with your doctor before starting any new supplements because there are several options out there. Also, some supplements may interact with any other medications you are taking so please take that into consideration.
